How to Snag an Oscar Nod: A Foolproof Plan

Is it Fall already? California might disagree, what with record-breaking heat, but the upcoming slate of movies sure seem to think so. So if it’s Fall, then it’s time for films positioning themselves as Oscar contenders. But how does an individual ensure that kind of recognition? Easy. Just follow one of these two steps:

1. Be someone everyone knows, so you’re already on the radar, and do strong work in a solid film — particularly if it is somehow unexpected, or contrary to your reputation heretofore. (Note:  The longer you go without getting recognized, the more lenient the Academy is on the “strong” and the “solid.” This is the Body of Work Clause. It is especially helpful for high-profile actresses, because sometimes the depressing dearth of high-caliber roles means any old thing can be nominated in a down year, not that I would ever name names.)

2. If no one knows who you are, do work that is both huge and stunning, so people are compelled to find out who you are. (Confidential Voter Train of Thought: If it inspires them to seek you out, it must be award-worthy.)

And there you have it! It may be too late to get your acclaim at this year’s Oscars, but next year will be here before you know it. So get cracking, and we’ll see you on nomination day.
